SMANR is a localised, student-run form of Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) — an FAO-recognised restoration approach. After clearing invasive Seemai Karuvelam, the native seedbank and rootstock already in the soil are protected and nurtured so the forest largely returns on its own, with saplings planted only to fill genuine gaps. It is deliberately low-water and survival-first, which is what makes it work across Tamil Nadu's dry districts.
Protects and nurtures native regrowth after invasives are cleared; plants natives only in the gaps; adds water-harvesting and habitat features so a full ecosystem returns. Low-water, low-cost, forgiving.
Miyawaki excavates, imports soil and plants 500+ dense saplings — high water and cost. SMANR works with what the land already holds. Dense Miyawaki stays an optional add-on for campuses with assured water.
Native rootstock and seeds already in the soil sprout on their own. No 2–3 years of daily watering.
Mostly fencing, weeding and student labour — no excavation, no truckloads of soil, no 500 saplings.
Any school or college can start — even a small campus, even without a big budget.
Remove the invasive Seemai Karuvelam (Prosopis juliflora) with its roots — not just cut at ground level, or it grows back thicker.
Fence the plot, stop grazing and burning, and mark every native seedling that appears so no one clears it as a weed.
Weed around the natives, mulch with dry leaves to hold moisture, water only during peak summer, and let the strongest saplings grow.
Only where nothing regenerates on its own, plant native saplings — Neem, Pungai, Naval, Vengai, Iluppai — from a Forest Department nursery.
A patch with even a little water supports several times the birds, frogs, dragonflies and pollinators of a dry one. A single SMANR plot can carry a crescent bund that soaks rain into the soil, native trees, a shallow seasonal pond, and a habitat corner of logs, rocks and perches — together, every layer of a food web.
A low crescent of soil, opening uphill, that catches rain runoff and soaks it into the ground right where the trees are. Dug by hand — ideal student work. No standing water.
A gravel-filled pit that soaks monsoon runoff into the groundwater and can recharge the campus borewell. No open water surface; worms and roots thrive around it.
A shallow scrape that fills in the monsoon and dries by summer. The sweet spot for an actual water body — frogs, dragonflies and waders love it, and because it dries out, mosquitoes can't complete a breeding cycle.
The richest habitat, but the most work: needs a summer water source, careful safety design, and active mosquito management. Only worth it where water is genuinely reliable.
A rock with a depression, or a wide shallow dish refreshed daily. Trivially cheap and safe — birds find them within days. A great starter while the bunds and pond mature.
Feeds earthworms and decomposers; closes the nutrient loop.
Deadwood is habitat — beetles, fungi, skinks and geckos move in.
Basking spots for lizards; shelter for small creatures.
Naval, Nunna, native figs, Ixora — bird and pollinator magnets.
A bare branch gets used at once; boxes bring cavity-nesters.
Core to SMANR — it's what lets the whole web establish.
Lead every campus with half-moon bunds + a seasonal scrape + bird baths and habitat piles — safe, cheap, low-water and high-impact. Reserve the permanent pond for the few campuses with assured water and staff to maintain it.
Adopt the plot and run a short weekly protection round.
Mark and count seedlings, log the first frog and bird, keep a photo-log.
Register the campus and link up with the local forest nursery.
A restored plot with water and habitat piles becomes a place students can study — the first frog logged, dragonfly species counted, the first kingfisher photographed. These dated photo-logs and species records feed the campus dashboard, the district-vs-district leaderboard, and impact reporting. "The day the first bird nested" is a far better story to share than another sapling count.
