Identify the location and walk it properly

Do not buy plants yet. The survey tells you how much will come back on its own — and how many nursery plants you actually need.

Half day · 6–12 students Phone GPS + notebook Same 4 photo corners every month

Choose a patch that can be protected

  • Unused corner, boundary strip, old Seemai Karuvelam thicket, dry tank bund, rear of hostels.
  • Not a marked building site. Not the main playground.
  • Visible from a building if you add any water feature.
  • Year-1 size: 0.1–0.5 acre is enough.
Permission first. Get a written nod from the Principal or estate office that this plot will not be cleared for parking or construction for at least three years.

Walk order

  1. Walk the boundary. Sketch it.
  2. Count standing trees — species, rough girth, health.
  3. Map invasive clumps. Prosopis must be marked for root removal.
  4. Flag every native seedling with ribbon so it is not “weeded”.
  5. Note soil, shade, monsoon flow, nearest water, cattle/fire risk.
  6. Photograph four fixed corners. Date the files.

What the survey decides

If you find…Then Year 1 is…
Many native seedlings after a little rainProtect and weed only. Nursery plants are few.
A Prosopis thicket and bare groundRoot-out first. Fence. Expect gap-filling after one monsoon.
Hard compacted fill, no seedbankMulch + bunds + more nursery stock. Still no Miyawaki unless water is sure.
Grazing every eveningDo not plant until the fence holds. Protection beats planting.
